Do you ever find yourself wondering if change is really possible? Have you made strides in creating the life that you want, only to realize that the new job turns out to be just like the old job, or the new boyfriend or girlfriend turns out to be hauntingly like the old one? Have you ever had a sense of deja vu when you realized that you’d been in this situation before, though the place is different, and the faces are different, but the dynamic is just the same?
Usually this means that an unconscious pattern is at work. You’re not aware of what’s happening–so it’s unconscious. But you realize, eventually, that you are the common denominator in all the circumstances, so it has to be something about you. From a metaphysical point of view, of course it’s you because you are the powerful (though sometimes unconscious ;-)) creator of your experience. As the nonphysical teachers, called Abraham, would say: “you take you with you wherever you go.” This can be a hard pill to swallow sometimes, yet it’s from this recognition that true freedom springs.
I was so inspired by two women recently who are attending a class I’m offering. I’ve know both of them for two years or longer. During our class they shared about themselves and what their current intentions are. Listening to them I was so moved because I could feel and see the changes in them since I had first met them and they had started doing Clarity Breathwork.
One of them has been a warrior all her life, strong, fiesty, aggressive, and now is softening. She talked about how she can lash out at people when she feels afraid, and that that is not her true intention any longer. Now her desire is to really connect, not to be right or to be more powerful. She invited the others there to know this about her so that they could understand her in case this pattern came up with them. This is what I call “telling on your patterns”–she really laid it out there. In doing so, she withdrew much of the power she had previously given unconsciously to that pattern. Now that it’s out in the open, everyone can see it for what it is. So if and when it surfaces, it can be referred to openly, and connection can be restored. Wow!! I was so impressed that she was willing to introduce herself with that kind of honesty and vulnerability–and from my point of view, that’s where true strength–and freedom–come from.
The other woman talked about she, for the first time in her life, was feeling her emotions. Through doing breathwork she had come to realize that it was safe to feel her emotions. She had just been cutting back on anti-depressents she’d been taking for years in order to suppress her feelings. While this was sometimes intense for her, it was also enlivening. I had never seen her so present and available. In the past she had often seemed to be behind an energetic shield or wall. There was color in her face, she smiled easily, and cried, too. I felt closer to her than I had in the three years I’d known her–closer because I could feel her realness in a new way. Again I was very moved by this experience. I could tell that feeling her emotions was new and sometimes scary, sometimes confusing. Yet I was and am inspired by her bravery, her willingness, and the breath of fresh air that literally emanated from her.
These women showed me yet again that true transformation is possible. You can let go of patterns that have defining your life for years, perhaps lifetimes. I know my warrior friend has been carrying that identity for a long, long time. But now her desire to truly heal, grow, and connect has become greater than the safety of that old identity. The light shines out from within. Layers of defenses to emotions can soften and let go–if you’re willing. Emotions are one of our greatest gifts as human beings. As you connect with what’s going on inside, and let your emotions flow, the whole of existence opens up.
